The International Organisation of Employers (IOE) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) host this public event, bringing together some of the leading policy experts on the links between climate change and human rights.

Climate change is rapidly becoming a global social and economic crisis, and businesses need to be prepared. Currently, there is a push among multilateral institutions and initiatives to extend the scope of due diligence requirements to new environmental obligations. Whatever the size and wherever a company is operating, it will be impacted in its operations, reporting and disclosure requirement, as well as internal processes. In particular:

• At global level: the recent adoption of a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly declaring access to a healthy environment as a universal fundamental right, or the current process of revision of the OECD Guidelines which will have far-reaching consequences for companies, but also;
• At EU level with the EU taxonomy, the EU draft due diligence directive and other initiatives.

These new requirements on companies, as part of  corporate responsibility to respect human rights, will have considerable impact. Businesses must now consider the “big picture” of climate change and human rights. They should be thinking about the steps they will need to take to “respect” this new right and mitigate associated risks even where States fail to act or act incompletely. This will add additional expectations and complexity to continuing business efforts to tackle climate change.
