Update on IOE New York activities

The IOE office in New York looks forward to upcoming HLPF activities and back at accomplishments since January 2023.

The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2023, convened under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council, will be held from 10-14 July in New York. The high-level segment of the Council, including the three-day HLPF ministerial segment, will take place from 17-20 July. The theme will be "Accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels”.

The 2023 HLPF will review in-depth SDGs 6, 7, 9, 11 and 17.  The Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) on SDG implementation in 40 countries will be presented during the HLPF.

The International Organisation of Employers (IOE) has been part of the Business Advisory Group – along with the Global Compact, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) – jointly planning the SDG Summit and HLPF. Together, as global business groups, we have been ensuring that the voice of employers is included in the various documents, activities and events.

Preliminary plans for UN General Assembly

19-20 September 2023: World leaders will gather at the SDG Summit in New York for the mid-point review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the implementation of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). IOE along with other business organizations will be engaged in various activities. 

Engagements and achievements since January 2023

• January: Business and Industry NY group organised at the Partnership Forum 2023 (ECOSOC) a Spotlight Event on Unlocking investment and financing for SDG implementation.
• February: IOE staff participated in the 61st Session of the Commission for Social Development - CSOCD and participated in two side events focusing on rights at work and sustainable social protection.  Also, participated in the World Day of Social Justice.
• March: IOE NY, GVA, and members attended the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in Doha. Please see the previous message on the 5-point plan.
• March: Organised a planning and coordination webinar with Business and Industry Major Group in March. 
• April: IOE participated in the ILO/ UN Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transition.
• May: Business and Industry Major Group organised at the STI Forum a side event titled Catalytic Private Sector Innovation Solutions in Africa.
• April and May: Actively participated in the preparation meetings for the HLPF including discussions on the Ministerial Declaration.
