Join the ILO's Global Coalition for Social Justice

IOE is reaching out to interested members and partners to take part in the ILO Global Coalition for Social Justice.

The Global Coalition for Social Justice is one of five components of the global social justice programme, presented by the Director-General (DG) in his vision statement. The DG’s initiative was formally presented at the 346th GB (November 2022) as a platform to promote policy coherence and foster investments for social justice and decent work globally and at the country level.

The International Organisation of Employers (IOE) invites all members and corporate partners to send an expression of interest to be part of this international initiative. In practical terms, this Coalition would be implemented by means of a platform led by the ILO where different UN and other multilateral organisations, employers’ and workers’ organisations, individual companies, NGOs or other actors could join with commitments to contribute further to the attainment of Social Justice.

After three informal consultations and two GB sessions to discuss the objectives, modalities, structure and mandate of the Global Coalition for Social Justice, the ILO tripartite constituents agreed with its launch. The Employers supported the launch, reiterating the crucial need to:

  1. ensure an ILO leading policy role in the initiative so that the GB properly follows and anticipates Coalition activities with complete alignment with existing ILO programme and budget priorities;
  2. preserve the proper governance system of the Coalition, which includes the role of the Secretariat of the Employers’ (and Workers’) Group and ACT/EMP as the entry point for any engagement of companies or employers’ organisations. This approach aims to avoid bypassing the convening and coordinating role of employers’ organisations;
  3. discuss thematic areas that are important and relevant to Employers: social dialogue, an enabling environment for sustainable enterprises, skills anticipation, productive employment, and tackling informality;
  4. avoid unnecessary duplication of resource mobilisation and ensuring synergies with current ILO flagship programmes. Also, the importance of strengthening linkages between the Coalition and other UN initiatives, such as “the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions”, particularly regarding potential donors; and
  5. position the ILO as a leading entity ahead of the UN Summit of the Future in 2024 and the anticipated UN World Social Summit in 2025.

All expressions of interest to join this Coalition as a Partner can be emailed to Ms Akustina Morni, IOE Policy Director (morni(at)ioe-emp.com).

The invitation letters from the ILO DG and more detailed information on the Coalition can be found in the Resources section.
