IOE and Deloitte publish new G20 Monitoring Report

The latest edition assesses advances G20 nations’ have made on commitments to women’s empowerment.

The International Organisation of Employers and Deloitte jointly released during the recent G20 meetings a major report on women empowerment in those countries. It shows that while progress is happening, the G20 nations are still lagging significantly in meeting their commitments to women’s empowerment.

The report framed its research around three questions: How has the labour market recovered post the pandemic, especially amongst women? How are G20 nations performing in the implementation of their commitments with respect to women’s empowerment? What is the path forward?

The report looked at four main G20 commitments:

a) increasing women’s labour force participation rate,

b) improving the quality of women’s earnings,

c) increasing women’s labour market security, and

d) achieving better working conditions.

The data reviewed was from 2016 – 2021. The results showed that while some improvement was achieved in getting more women into the workforce, for the rest, the situation stagnated or got worse.

Other data in the report shows that women are returning to the workforce post-Covid 19, but that in several nations, their numbers still lag pre-Covid levels, including Brazil, China, Germany, India, and the United States, among others.

The report outlines a way forward to improve the uptake of G20 commitments through the introduction of comprehensive education measures and increasing entrepreneurship skills and opportunities for women. It also suggests additional monitoring of the effectiveness and impact of government policies and initiatives to strengthen the implementation of commitments at national levels.
