Aim of the meeting
This technical meeting will aim to generate consensus and support for concrete actions to promote gender equality and decent work for women, and to address obstacles women encounter in large and small-scale mining in Africa.
Objectives
- Identify the building blocks for addressing the challenges to advance women’s opportunities and decent work in mining.
- Identify strategic policy approaches and recommendations for action by governments, employers, and workers to improve working conditions for women and to advance gender equality and decent work in large and small-scale mining.
- Given the abrogation of the Underground Work (Women) Convention, 1935 (No. 45), promote ratification of the ILO Safety and Health in Mines Convention, 1995 (No. 176), the ILO Violence and Harassment Convention, 2019 (No. 190), and other gender equality-related ILO Conventions, and identify and address obstacles to submission, ratification and effective implementation.
- Identify best practices and recommendations for action by governments, employers and workers to advance gender equality and decent work in the mining industry in Africa.
Country scope: Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Mauritania, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
IOE Role
Mr Amadou Sako, IOE Adviser and Project Officer for Africa, will represent the employers and take part in the event.
