IOE preparatory meeting for ILO Fifth Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour

IOE preparatory meeting ahead of ILO Fifth Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour.

In preparation for the ILO Global Conference on Elimination of Child Labour, IOE organised a preparatory meeting on Monday 28 March 2022 to recognise the contributions made by employers during the 2021 International Year of Elimination of Child Labour and to discuss how to carry this momentum forward to the Global Conference this year. Participants heard directly from a government representative of the host country (South Africa) on the Conference preparation and had an opportunity to discuss the thematic panels and the outcome document, which will be adopted in the Global Conference. In addition, participants learned about the new IOE and Ardea collaboration on business due diligence to eliminate child labour in supply chains.

The ILO Global Conference on Elimination of Child Labour will take place on 15-20 May 2022 in Durban, South Africa. It will be an opportunity for representatives from governments, trade unions, the private sector, civil society regional and international organisations, think tanks, academia, youth and children, to share their experiences, good practices and to push for accelerated further collective actions to reach SDG Target 8.7 to eradicate child labour by 2025.  

The last Global Conference took place in Argentina in 2017, where many stakeholders made pledges to end child labour. Given this year’s Conference will be the last opportunity for the global community to meet before the SDG 2025 deadline, it will be important to strengthen the global commitment and effort towards effective implementation of these pledges.
