In 2017, the Global Estimates of Modern Slavery estimated 40.3 million people were victims of modern slavery, of which 24.9 million people were in forced labour and 15.4 million people were living in a forced marriage to which they ad not consented. Furthermore, women and girls were disproportionate affected by modern slavery and one in four victims were children.

Now, five years on as the world recovers from a global health pandemic, the ILO will publish new global estimates on forced labour. The new estimate will comprise of forced labour in the private economy (forms of forced labour imposed by private individuals, groups, or companies in all sectors except the commercial sex industry), forced sexual exploitation of adults and sexual exploitation of children, and state-imposed forced labour.

IOE invites members and partner companies to the launch of this new report. There will be ILO experts to explain key findings of the report and what the new figures mean for the private sector. This will be an opportunity for employer organisations to discuss how the private sector can take measures to eradicate forced labour and modern slavery in order to reach SDG Target 8.7.
