This side event will highlight priority actions, policy requirements, and innovations of business and employers groups focused on restoring livelihoods and accelerating a sustainable pandemic recovery that addresses challenges of energy and food security and advances education and inclusion. It will relate to this year’s High-Level Political Forum theme, “Building back better from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) while advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.

The UN Secretary-General’s draft annual report on SDG progress recommends actions to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and “rescue the SDGs.” The report highlights the “multiple and interlinked global crises” the world is facing – COVID-19, the climate crisis, and ongoing violent conflicts, including the war in Ukraine. It warns that “years, or even decades, of development progress have been halted or reversed” as a result, and “the very viability of achieving the SDGs by 2030” is at risk. The report estimates that an additional 75 million to 95 million people will have been pushed into extreme poverty in 2022 compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Speakers at this side event include:

  • Leonardo Garnier - UN Secretary General Special Envoy for the Transforming Education Summit
  • Chris Sharrock - Microsoft Vice President, UN Affairs and International Organisations
  • Lisa Burkett - Senior Manager, Corporate Sustainability of the National Gas Company (NGC) of Trinidad & Tobago
