On 30 January 2023, IOE & the B20 India Secretariat –hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)– launched the first session of 'One Global Women Empowerment' (OGWE). This B20 initiative promotes inclusive, resilient and sustainable global economic growth by empowering women and ensuring continuity in the gender equality advocacy work between B20 presidencies through peer learning and collective action.

In his welcoming remarks, IOE Secretary-General, Roberto Suárez Santos, presented OGWE as a platform for change and progress for women in business and invited participants to follow IOE's lead & set out concrete actions to achieve the ambitions of the OGWE agenda. In her opening statement, the Chair of B20 Indonesia Women in Business Action Council, founding member of OGWE, President Director & CEO of Unilever Indonesia, Ira Noviarti, emphasised that equal opportunities for women benefit countries and businesses.

Deloitte India Director, Rumki Majumdar, presented IOE-Deloitte G20 Monitoring report "Women Empowerment – Time for Action." Report outcomes show that G20 countries are far behind in the implementation of their commitments on women's empowerment. While progress has been made particularly in the participation of women in the labour force, labour market security and working conditions for women have worsened.

Asking what can move the needle on gender equality and women's empowerment, especially for women in business, B20 India representative and National Chairperson of the CII Indian Women Network, Smita Vaish Agarwal, highlighted the importance of an ecosystem change to achieve women integration in business. She also highlighted the challenges faced by women in the workplace and called for national policy regulation on safety and sanitation.

The event concluded with an open conversation between experts and business leaders on the key private sector messages to the G20 India on the necessary next steps to advance women's empowerment. Some of the ideas that emerged included creating a better advocacy process that puts women in business empowerment at the top of the G20's agenda and promoting stronger and more active private initiatives. IOE thanks the insightful panel of speakers: Chidi King, Gender, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Branch Chief at the International Labour Organisation (ILO); Ashwath Ram, B20 India representative, Chairman of CII National Committee on Industrial Relations, Managing Director of Cummins India Ltd. and President of Employers’ Federation of India; Jacqueline Mugo, Executive Director of the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE); Willem Adema, Senior Economist of the Social Policy Division at OECD and Laura Gimenez, Head of Legislation and Social Policy Department at Unión Industrial Argentina (UIA).

This is just the start of a year packed with insightful conversations! IOE is proud to lead the permanent OGWE Secretariat and looks forward to engaging further as we promote women's empowerment across the G20 community and beyond.
