Last week, the B20 Conference on Future of Work, Skilling & Mobility invited experts to highlight challenges, ideas, policy recommendations and organisation best practices on two thematic panels: transition from informal to formal economy and promoting an inclusive and diverse workforce.

The Conference was co-organised by CII (B20 Secretariat), IOE and Deloitte. IOE Secretary-General Roberto Suárez Santos moderated the first high-level panel and IOE Director for Employment, Skills and Diversity Akustina Morni was a panellist in the second panel.

Experts highlighted the need to identify the root causes and barriers to formalisation, and then include incentives and cooperation at the national levels to promote the smooth transition.

On the inclusion and diversity questions, experts highlighted the importance of the shifting of mindsets at the societal and enterprise levels to provide more economic and development opportunities for women in the workplace, in politics and in the private sector.

The B20 task force members proceeded to meet after the Conference to finalise the employment policy recommendations for the consideration of the G20 prior to the 18th Heads of State and Government Summit of the G20 themed “One Earth, One Family, One Future” from 9-10 September 2023.

At the G20 Ministerial Dinner hosted by the G20 India presidency, IOE Secretary-General Roberto Suárez Santos highlighted in the opening address three key messages on behalf of the international business community. These messages focused on the importance for policymakers to work with business on:

  1. the new realities of the world of work which will require adaptive labour and social policies;
  2. the need to accelerate efforts on skills anticipation to address urgent skills shortages and;
  3. promoting an enabling environment for business to grow and thrive, especially micro, small and medium sized enterprises.

IOE Secretary-General Roberto Suárez Santos also took the opportunity to announce the special launching of the IOE-Deloitte G20 monitoring report, this year’s theme is on United Nations SDG 8 (an important pillar for the business community on ‘decent work and economic growth’). The following day saw the G20 Ministerial meetings and ended with a dinner hosted by Deloitte, IOE and B20 for all G20 Ministers, delegates and guests at Chappan Dukaan food street.
