Review of ILO Health and Safety Conventions: request for assistance and expertise

Dear Members,

The IOE is preparing the Employers for the third meeting of the ILO Standards Review Mechanism Tripartite Working Group (SRM-TWG), that will be held from 25-29 September 2017 and will report to the Governing Body at its 331st Session in October-November 2017.

The ILO SRM-TWG will examine the following 19 instruments concerning occupational safety and health:

  1. Occupational Health Services Convention, 1985 (No. 161)
  2. Prevention of Industrial Accidents Recommendation, 1929 (No. 31)
  3. Occupational Health Services Recommendation, 1985 (No. 171)
  4. White Lead (Painting) Convention, 1921 (No. 13)
  5. Guarding of Machinery Convention, 1963 (No. 119)
  6. Maximum Weight Convention, 1967 (No. 127)
  7. Benzene Convention, 1971 (No. 136)
  8. Asbestos Convention, 1986 (No. 162)
  9. Chemicals Convention, 1990 (No. 170)
  10. Prevention of Major Industrial Accidents Convention, 1993 (No. 174)
  11. Anthrax Prevention Recommendation, 1919 (No. 3)
  12. Lead Poisoning (Women and Children) Recommendation, 1919 (No. 4)
  13. White Phosphorus Recommendation, 1919 (No. 6)
  14. Guarding of Machinery Recommendation, 1963 (No. 118)
  15. Maximum Weight Recommendation, 1967 (No. 128)
  16. Benzene Recommendation, 1971 (No. 144)
  17. Asbestos Recommendation, 1986 (No. 172)
  18. Chemicals Recommendation, 1990 (No. 177)
  19. Prevention of Major Industrial Accidents Recommendation, 1993 (No. 181)

According to its terms of references, the SRM TWG shall review the international labour standards with a view to making recommendations to the ILO Governing Body on:

  • the status of the standards examined, including up-to-date standards, standards in need of revision, outdated standards, and possible other classifications
  • the identification of gaps in coverage, including those requiring new standards
  • practical and time-bound follow-up action, as appropriate.

Eight Employers were nominated to participate in the meeting. In addition, and given the technical nature of the instruments to be examined, we invite IOE members and partner companies to identify Experts in their organisations who can assist the eight Employers and the IOE and ACT/EMP secretariats in preparing the Employers' position for this important meeting.

Please contact us no later than 29 August 2017 with your suggestions.

Yours sincerely,

María Paz Anzorreguy

Senior Adviser
