Update on 5th session of the UN Treaty process on business and human rights
States met last week to negotiate/discuss the Revised Draft Treaty on TNCs and OBEs.
Please find attached IOE’s summary of the 5th session of the UN’s Inter-Governmental Working Group on transnational corporations and other business enterprises with respect to human rights (IGWG), which met from 14 to 18 October in Geneva.
The IGWG negotiated/discussed the Revised Draft Treaty prepared by the Chair (Ecuador in June 2019).
Prior to the 5th session, IOE released a Joint Business Response to the Revised Draft Treaty, which it drafted with Business at OECD (BIAC) and Business Europe. This joint response describes the business community's:
- Commitment to respecting human rights - in context.
- Substantive concerns with the Revised Draft Treaty.
IOE participated in the 5th session all week, supported by USCIB and the IOE's partner company/law firm Littler, to follow the discussions and explain the business position on the Revised Draft Treaty.
