How has business supported the human rights agenda over the past ten years?

Questionnaire to assess the contribution of business to the implementation of the UNGPs.

June 2021 marks the tenth anniversary of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) after its endorsement by the UN Human Rights Council in June 2011. The UNGPs and the Bahrain Declaration have become the global benchmark to understand and distinguish the respective roles and responsibilities of governments and company’s vis-a-vis business and human rights.

Through its consistent work over the past ten years, IOE has advocated for business and employers’ organizations to thoroughly understand the UNGPs “protect, respect, and remedy” framework to appreciate the responsibilities of business.

In order to further deepen and strengthen the implementation of the UNGPs by the business sector over the next ten years, we must first review:

  • where progress has taken place,
  • what good practices exist,
  • where gaps and challenges remain,
  • what key obstacles stand in the way of the full implementation of the UNGPs,
  • how and what should be done to speed up the implementation of these principles, taking into account the present and future challenges.

IOE encourages employers’ and business organisations to fill out this questionnaire to consolidate the employers’ position on what needs to happen to promote the UNGPs.
