Global Compact

The IOE has been involved in the Global Compact since its creation by the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2000.  The Global Compact asks companies to commit, in writing, from the highest level of the business, to advance and report on the realisation of the 10 Principles which are:

Human Rights

  • Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and
  • Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.


  • Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
  • Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;
  • Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labour; and
  • Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation


  • Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
  • Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
  • Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.


  • Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

Some 80% of Global Compact member companies are SMEs.

Since 2006, the IOE Secretary-General has been a permanent member of the Board of the Global Compact and is now also Co-chair of the Labour Principles Working Group, created on the IOE's initiative in 2008. Other Principles, like human rights, also have working groups that look to develop tools and guidance for business engagement.

Today, with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at its head, the Global Compact describes itself as the largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative in the world, with 8,500 corporate signatories in more than 135 countries adhering to the Principles.
