Recap of the Future of Work Global Employers' Workshop

Dear Members, Partners and Colleagues,

As you are aware, the Future of Work is a matter of high priority for the employer community. The debates revolve around how to identify and interpret trends; how to prepare and adapt to meet challenges; as well as how to harness the new opportunities being presented for sustainable success.

The IOE, in collaboration with the Confederación Española de Organizaciones Empresariales (CEOE), with funding from the European Union, has brought together, in Madrid, on March 29-30, a wide cast of panellists and approximately 100 participants from around the world, who gave their take on topics such as the new business models; diverse forms of employment; social protection; industrial relations and employer organisations’ services in the future.

All the presentations made during the meeting, as well as the final programme of the meeting, are accessible via the links in the side panel.

Based on the IOE brief "Understanding the Future of Work" (brief and the executive summary), a set of conclusions and recommendations for policymakers has been identified on the basis of the multiple interventions. The following 5 main areas for action have been determined:

-              The general business environment

-              Skills needs

-              Labour market

-              Social protection and social security

-              Research and innovation

-              Industrial relations and social dialogue

Within those areas, certain concrete proposals have been given the most of attention, which will be compiled in a document that will be circulated as soon as possible. The IOE will be working on these proposals and other follow-up activities, in close collaboration with the members of the IOE FoW taskforce.

The conclusions will serve as the basis for a further discussion that will take place during the International Labour Conference in June 2017, with a special focus on the diversity in the forms of employment. The text of the conclusions, together with information on this new meeting, will be circulated as appropriate.

Please do not hesitate to contact us for any further information that you may require,

Yours sincerely,

Roberto Suárez Santos

Deputy Secretary-General
