Hybrid workshop on Migration governance: Preparatory sub-regional meetings for employers and governments in South Africa

Employers and governments of thirteen countries in South Africa will meet in Johannesburg, South Africa, in preparation for the IMRF 2022.

The International Organisation of Employers is organizing a series of sub-regional meetings for employers and governments in preparation for the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) due to take place on 16-20 May 2022. The purpose of these sub-regional meetings is to bring together the valuable expertise of the participants and build on the outcomes of the employers’ consultations to draft an African Employers Declaration to be presented at the IMRF 2022.

The third sub-regional meeting takes place on 20-21 April 2022 for thirteen countries in southern Africa. Employers and government representatives from Botswana, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Equatorial Guinea, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe will come together in Johannesburg, South Africa for public-private dialogue with the objective to:

1. foster genuine and constructive dialogue between employers and policymakers on migration-related issues.
2. identify concrete solutions to be implemented in cooperation with employers and governments to ease the movement of workers where/when needed in the labour market.

IOE and its members in Africa and across the world actively promote regular pathways for migration that are responsive to labour market realities and conducive to responsible recruitment. Employers stand ready to support governments in the implementation of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM), in particular the objectives 5 on legal pathways, 6 on recruitment and 18 on skills development and recognition. The dialogue meetings will focus on these objectives.
