IOE appoints Special Representative to United Nations in New York

On 1 May, Ms Shea Gopaul took up her post as IOE's first Special Representative to the United Nations in New York.

Following the IOE Management Board's recent decision to appoint a Special Representative to the United Nations in New York, we are pleased to announce that Ms Shea Gopaul took up her new post on 1 May 2019.

With over 20 years of professional experience in the UN system (ILO, UN, and WHO), Shea will be best known to many of you in her former capacity as head of the Global Apprenticeship Network (GAN), which she led as Executive Director for several years following its establishment as a successful, independent, not-for-profit public-private partnership, hosted by IOE in Geneva, with the mission of promoting “skills for business and jobs for youth”.

Shea’s deep knowledge and experience of the UN system, and other intergovernmental processes through her work with the GAN (G20/B20), as well as of IOE’s activities and our global membership network, will be strong assets as she works in a consulting capacity to advance IOE’s efforts to achieve permanent Observer Status before the UN General Assembly.  Shea will also support IOE’s enhanced engagement with the UN system in connection with the SDGs.

Shea is a graduate of Point Park University and holds a Master’s in International Education from Columbia University, as well as an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters. She has published numerous articles on private sector engagement, youth unemployment and employer-driven education and is recognised as a Fellow of the IZA Institute of Labour Economics and an International Gender Champion.

Please join us in welcoming Shea on board; we look forward to reporting on further development in due course.
