IOE addresses high-level UN migration event

IOE Secretary General speaks out about ethical recruitment and transforming the narrative around migration at UN high-level events on migration in New York.

Roberto Suárez-Santos, IOE Secretary-General, took part in February in a global debate on international migration, hosted by the President of the General Assembly, Maria Fernanda Espinosa.

Mr. Suarez-Santos reiterated IOE’s view on the critical importance of contributing to effective PPPs (with the IOE and its member organisations) for skills development and to influencing positively the narrative around migration to counter the current negative rhetoric in return for governments’ commitment to consider the business case for migration. Promoting ethical/fair recruitment and fundamental principles and rights at work was also highlighted as a commitment from employers.

This message was further reinforced at an ILO side event on “Ensuring Fair recruitment for realising human potential and sustainable development”. The side-event provided the opportunity to engage further on the future of IOE partnerships with ILO, IOM, UNESCO and ITUC on skills for migrant workers.

IOE Secretary General also met separately with Ms. Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, to discuss the UN engagement with the private sector.
