IOE contributes to public hearing on European companies in indigenous territories in Latin America

IOE Senior Adviser María Paz Anzorreguy contributed to a public discussion in the European Parliament on 9 February, on the subject of European companies in indigenous territories in Latin America. In her comments, she highlighted the perspective of the business community and in particular the need to implement ILO Convention 169 in a balanced manner in those states which have ratified it. She pointed out that the Convention is important both in protecting the rights of indigenous people as well as in creating an economic and social climate that facilitates investment and employment opportunities for indigenous people and society in general.

She also explained the concern of the business sector in relation to the systematic confusion resulting from the assertion by certain parties that the reference to “prior consultation” (Articles 6, 7, 15 and 16) of ILO Convention 169 should be understood as meaning “free, prior and informed consent”. This generates counterproductive expectations among indigenous communities and hinders dialogue with them. Finally, she presented the IOE’s activities at international, regional, and local level to promote a balanced implementation of the Convention.

María Paz Anzorreguy’s full speech (in Spanish only), as well as the agenda for the event is available
