g7+ hones in on private sector job creation in fragile states

Countries of the g7+ met in Brussels on 30-31 March 2015 to discuss best practices to foster "jobs for peace". Organised by the g7+ Secretariat and the ILO, the event on Fragile-to-Fragile Cooperation considered new policies to create employment, especially for young people, and encourage stability. The g7+ is a voluntary association of countries that are or have been affected by conflict and are moving into the next stage of development. IOE was represented by Mr. Marc Atibu Saleh Mwekee (Fédération des Entreprises du Congo).

Representatives discussed evidence-based policies and innovative forms of intervention for fragile states in transition. Countries in a situation of fragility experience similar situations and face comparable challenges. All have recognised employment generation as a critical factor in maintaining peace, particularly in the early stages of post-conflict reconstruction, when young people need alternative forms of work.

The meeting adopted a set of recommendations, which include that in the medium and long term the private sector is important in creating sustainable jobs. This requires better infrastructure; access to finance; an improved skills-base; an enabling environment for business including the rule of law; and support to manage risk.
