The EU has issued two communications which identify as an area for support the strengthening of employers’ organisations, particularly in the LDCs, with a view to building their capacity to contribute to development.
These publications “The roots of democracy and sustainable development: Europe’s engagement with Civil Society in external relations” (2012) and “A Stronger Role of the Private Sector in Achieving Inclusive and Sustainable Growth in Developing Countries” (2014) also set out priority areas that echo the IOE’s own: employment creation, improving the business climate, supporting the transition to the formal economy, promoting responsible business practices; strengthening the private sector voice in the global sustainability agenda, scaling up responsible and effective social dialogue and improving OSH frameworks.
This has led to ever closer collaboration between the IOE, as the most representative employer voice in the world, and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DEVCO).
A range of activities are planned under the framework of this partnership. These will begin in Africa, Latin America and the Caucasus, with a special focus on LDCs.
