ADAPT : Association d'études internationales comparatives dans le domaine de la législation du travail et des relations professionnelles

(en anglais seulement)

The IOE participated in the annual conference organised by ADAPT (Association for International and Comparative Studies in the field of labour law and industrial relations) and the University of Bergamo (Italy) on one of the most relevant themes of the future of work debate: "Triggering Factors and Enabling Skills" for Industry 4.0.

The truly inspiring presentations on work, people and organisations focussed on the worker, and a model of work, which is: based on a variety of cognitive skills (hard and soft); results-oriented and constantly challenging on a personal basis. Work is designed to be a passion and not an obligation.

The Conference explored the idea of a new worker being an "architect of the socio-technical systems", self-built (architect), and with a broad set of expertise areas (social and technical). These new workers are particularly employable for "hybrid jobs".

There is a shift in personal attitudes towards employability, together with a constant need to learn: from lifelong learning to "recurrent learning". It is a new logic of work: based on a "stop–study–work-repeat" model where the worker's self-development lies at the heart of working life.

The Conference put forward the idea that individuals be provided with the adequate financial resources to be able to learn, as and when necessary, and be guided by institutions and companies who are also supported to enhance and assess workers' capabilities.

To reach this level of independence, welfare systems should be human-centered and should avoid the pre-established, historical structures that have until now defined the world of work (trade unions/employers’ organisations/social dialogue institutions/public administrations). Those structures need to re-adapt to the new worker and the new industrial era.

The ADAPT Conference was held in Bergamo, Italy from 1-2 December 2017
