Update: 19th ILO American Regional Meeting, 2-5 October 2018

Dear members and colleagues,

As you may recall from our previous communication, the 19th American Regional Meeting will take place in Panama City, Panama from 2-5 October 2018 under the theme "The Future of Work we want". At four-yearly intervals, the meeting brings together ILO constituents from the Americas – the political, economic and social actors from the countries of the Region.

We are pleased to provide an update of the meeting, including the provisional programme (available via the link in the side panel).

Structure of the Meeting

The meeting will be structured around the following discussions:

1. Discussion on the Report of the Director-General: "Preparing the future of work we want in the Americas through social dialogue" (available via the link in the side panel). One Employer delegate from each country will intervene in the discussion (maximum 5 minutes). If you have the intention of participating in this discussion, please send us an email (anzorreguy@ioe-emp.com).

2. Four Plenary Sittings

  • First Thematic Sitting: Preparing the future of work we want: Policies for sustainable, productive development for sustained and inclusive growth, with more and better decent jobs.
  • Second Thematic Sitting: Preparing the future of work we want: Policies to promote the transition from the informal to the formal economy and to respond to accelerating technological change and to diverse forms of employment.
  • Third Thematic Sitting: Preparing the future of work we want: Measures and policies to strengthen and redesign institutions in the world of work, including social security, and to ensure that trade union and labour rights are fully upheld.
  • Fourth Thematic Sitting: Preparing the future of work we want: The digital economy and labour skills and competences.

The ILO Office prepared the conceptual notes that serve as the basis for the discussions in each plenary sitting. They can be accessed via the links in the side panel (in Spanish).

Please note that the IOE, as the Secretariat to the Employers' Group, will appoint a speaker for each plenary sitting, who shall deliver a speech on behalf of the Group. The IOE also encourages its members to participate in the debate with the audience to complement and support the speaker’s presentation.

3. Three informative sessions

  • First Informative Session: The promotion and implementation of the Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy in the Americas (the Declaration can be accessed via the link in the side panel).
  • Second Informative Session: Advances and challenges in the elimination of child labour in the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
  • Third Informative Session: Advances and challenges in reducing the pay gap and other gender gaps in the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Unlike the informative session on child labour, which will have a discussion format, the informative sessions will include a presentation instead of a panel. This presentation is to be delivered by the Office and shall deal with advances and challenges in each of the thematic areas.

Meetings of the Employers' Group

The programme foresees group meetings every day. These meetings are the appropriate space for employer delegates to submit the content and strategy for each of the discussions to the Group and for drafting the conclusions of the meeting.

The first Group meeting will take place on Tuesday 2 October from 9.00 to 11.00 (room to be determined).

Practical information

The side panel contains a link to the ILO web page with practical information (you will see a box on the right-hand side of the page with links to practical support to prepare your participation in the meeting).

We will be sending more updated information in the coming days.

Yours sincerely,

Maria Paz Anzorreguy

Senior Adviser
