The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry was formed in September 1992 as a result of a merger between the Confederation of Australian Industry and the Australian Chamber of Commerce.
The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is registered under the Australian Capital Territory Corporation Act 1989.
3. Historical overview
The Confederation of Australian Industry was formed in 1977, through a merger of the Australian Council of Employers' Federations (founded 1904) and the Associated Chamber of Manufactures of Australia (also founded in 1904). The Australian Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1901.
The ACCI is the peak council of Australian commerce and industry and is the largest and most representative business organisation in Australia. Through its member associations it represents employers across all States and Territories on all matters affecting them.
Membership of ACCI is made up of Chambers of Commerce, Chambers of Manufactures and employer or industry associations.
4. Present structure
Board of Directors: responsible for administration, financial matters and general direction of the organisation. Composition: President, Deputy President, seven Directors, Treasurer, Past President and Chief Executive Officer.
General Council: responsible for general policy of the Organisation. Composition: a representative for each member organisation.
Employment and Labour Relations Forum: responsible to the General Council for policy on employment and social affairs.
Secretariat: run by a Chief Executive Officer assisted by the Director-General. There is also a Manager for Labour Relations Affairs.
5. Functions
The ACCI is active at the national level, while its member associations operate principally at State, sectoral and enterprise level.

6. Membership
40 member associations incorporating over 300,000 enterprises in all sectors of economic activity, principally in the private sector. This represents over 50% of eligible employers. The ACCI network employs about 75% of the total workforce.
7. Affiliations
The ACCI is a member of the IOE and of BIAC and represents all Australian employers in ILO activities.
8. Publications
ACCI's main Newsletter is the "ACCI Review", which acts as a means to communicate ACCI's policy.
